Common Referrals
Prostate
Prostate cancer (suspected or confirmed)
Indications for urgent review:
If you have a patient with bone pain in the setting of suspected or confirmed prostate cancer, please call so that we can arrange urgent review and hospital admission if required.
If your patient has any neurological signs, or you are concerned they may be at risk of cord compression please send them directly to the Emergency Department and let us know so that we can arrange to see them as soon as possible.
Referrals for elevated PSA or suspected prostate cancer:
We are very happy to see any patients with an elevated PSA or abnormal prostate on digital rectal examination for further evaluation. We can facilitate MRI prostate and transperineal biopsy where indicated.
If your patient has had an isolated abnormal PSA, please repeat the PSA 1-3 months after the initial test including a free-to-total ratio. Please also arrange an MSU for all patients. If you have any clinical concern, please call us to arrange an urgent appointment.
Kidney
Renal stones or renal colic
Indications for urgent review:
If your patient has a fever associated with renal colic or severe pain, or has a known ureteric stone with a history of single kidney, please send them straight to the Emergency Department and let us know so that we can arrange to see them as soon as possible.
Suspected renal stones:
For all other patients with stones, please send us a routine referral with CT KUB, MSU and renal function results.
Renal mass
For suspected renal cancer please call us to arrange an urgent appointment.
For all patients with a renal mass please include imaging results (renal tract ultrasound or preferably CT with contrast) and baseline bloods (including renal function) with your referral.
Bladder
Haematuria
Indications for urgent review:
If your patient has severe bleeding or you are worried about possible clot retention, please direct them to the closest Emergency Department for urgent assessment.
Referrals for workup of haematuria:
For all other patients, please order an MSU, renal function and renal tract USS (or CT IVP if visible haematuria and renal function permits)
If you have performed urine cytology, please also send us these results. Urine cytology is not needed in all cases.
Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms
We are very happy to see patients for evaluation and management of bothersome lower urinary tract symptoms. Please organise an MSU and renal tract USS (assessing post void residual, presence of hydronephrosis and prostate volume for men). Where appropriate, please also include PSA history with the referral.
For patients with complex presentations or symptoms refractory to previous treatment, we can perform urodynamics for further evaluation as needed.
Urinary Retention
Indications for urgent review:
If your patient is in acute painful urinary retention or has chronic retention with hydronephrosis or declining renal function, please call us to arrange urgent intervention +/- hospital admission if required or direct them to straight to the Emergency Department.
Chronic urinary retention:
For patients with chronic urinary retention who have normal renal function and no hydronephrosis, please send a regular referral with MSU, renal tract USS and renal function test results.
Recurrent UTI
Please organise a renal tract ultrasound, including post void residual. Thank you for also including a copy of any MSU culture results.
Testis and Scrotum
Acute Scrotal Pain
If your patient has acute scrotal pain and you have any concern that they may have testicular torsion, please direct them to the closest Emergency Department for urgent assessment.
Testicular Cancer
For testicular cancer (suspected or confirmed tumour), please arrange an urgent ultrasound and call us with the result, so that we can arrange an urgent review.
Other Scrotal Pathology
For non-urgent scrotal pathology (including symptomatic hydrocele/varicocele, chronic testicular pain, or benign mass) please include scrotal ultrasound and urine culture results with your routine referral.
